  • My goals as your teacher are:

    • Develop and noursish your musical style.

    • Learn to love music and include it in your every day life. I encourage performing often, going to concerts, and listening to all kinds of music. Classical, jazz, rock, pop, whatever lights you up.

What students will gain from lessons:

    • Make steady improvement through self-guided daily practice.

    • Develop a beautiful tone and proficient technique.

    • Demonstrate musical proficiency. Rhythm, notes, articulation, music theory + history, musical expression, sight reading, etc.

    • A sense of accomplishment. I’ll push you, but only because I know there is no greater feeling than accomplishing your goals. This will build your self-confidence and help you achieve a lot more than just musical goals

    • Apply skills learned during lessons in every day life. I believe music lessons help us learn discipline, grit, perseverance, how to process feedback, interpersonal skills, and goal setting and I seek to instill all of these skills in my students.

  • Lesson Expectations:

    • Have an open mind - Come ready to learn and ask questions!

    • Bring your instrument, music books, and notebooks. However, if you forget we can still learn! Music history, music theory, and mental practice are all great skills I can teach without any of these.

    • Arrive and depart on time.

    Practicing Guidelines:

    • Prepare the best you can. This means practicing most days of the week. It means marking your music, going through the music checklist, and triple-checking fingerings and rhythms. This does not mean perfection. We are here to grow, not to be perfect.

    • Students will be expected to listen to a variety of recordings, complete online activities, read articles, watch videos, and complete assignments outside of regular flute lessons.

    • Your practice room should have a music stand, a metronome and, for advanced students, a tuner. Students should be using the metronome every day!

    • If the student did not get a chance to practice, they should still come to their lesson so we can go over our goals and set a new plan.

    • Take care of your flute. Brush your teeth before playing. Clean it and put it in its case after EVERY time you play. Take it in for yearly cleanings. Take off rings before you play!

    • If a student doesn’t express interest in practicing or commitment to preparing their materials, they may be excused from the studio.

    Cancellation & rescheduling policy:

    • Let me know as soon as you know you can’t make it to a lesson, preferably at least the day before.

    • If you are sick, please do not come to your lesson! I don’t want to get sick either.

    • If a student has a habit of not coming to lessons, we will reevaluate whether the student can still participate in the studio.

    • If I need to reschedule or cancel, I will do my best to contact you within 24 hours.

    Payment Policy

My studio payment plan is a weekly payment due at each lesson. Because my schedule varies due to performing and university teaching obligations, I charge weekly based on both mine and the student’s availability. Venmo works best, but cash or check also works.

My Venmo is @rachelcflute. Please be proactive about paying the fee every week. I will send a request if I don’t receive payment.

    Contact

    • Please communicate via text (preferred), email, or phone call. Students are welcome (and expected) to contact me with any questions or just to let me know how they’re doing.

  • • A working instrument. If you need recommendations for a new flute, I’m happy to recommend and help you during this process. Please do not order a flute from Amazon.

    • A metronome! You can purchase these at any music store or online. You can also use apps on your phone. My favorite is Tonal Energy. If you have screen time restrictions on your child’s phone, please don’t include any tuning or metronome apps in that.

    • Music stand. This is key to good posture, which is key to good playing! A sturdy music stand like the Manhasset #48 is a good investment. In my experience, other stands tend to be too short, break often, or tip over if a piece of paper is on it.

    Cleaning rod and cloth

    • Any books or materials required by the instructor.

    • If it needs repair or yearly cleaning I recommend taking it to Spencer Robertson with Jordan Winds. He does excellent work and charges more than fair prices. His website is jordanwinds.com. A closer option is Summerhays in Orem - I’ve heard wonderful things about their flute specialist.
